Great work Scott, good color choices and I really like what you came up with for the background.
this looks really good, i love it! everything looks nicely trampled :) i like the shadows on everything and especially on the elephant's body.. my only suggestion would be to add a shadow on the ground from the elephant. nice job!!
I have a couple of suggestions before you turn this in. The edge of the background gradient is just cut off, and not great for a spot illustration. I would consider some kind of gradient fade.
Also, I would lessen the texture on the elephant a ton. It looks out of place next to the other parts of the image.
I also agree with Steph, the elephant needs a shadow.
